Talk of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a skin care remedy that’s been around for a while, I’ve never really been sure what it does apart from give me a mini massage whenever I bathe. But surprisingly there is a lot more to exfoliation than just being on your to-do list whist in the shower.

Here are a few reasons why we all need to start exfoliation on a regular basis.

Improves Skin Tone

Exfoliating your skin helps to improve skin tone because it facilitates the recycling of skin cells by removing layers of dead skin so the healthier skin can replace them. As well as getting rid of dead skin cells exfoliating also helps to remove leftover dirt and makeup to uncover the bright, brand new, you that’s been hiding underneath.

Fights off Signs of Aging

As we age, our wrinkles and fine lines tend to want to reveal themselves, and the dead skin cells don’t help by making them stand out more. Our ability to shed dead skin cells slows down the older we get, so to help prevent the wrinkles and fine lines from standing out more exfoliating helps us age gracefully by removing the old skin cells.

Keeps Skin Clear

Blackheads, whiteheads, spots, pimples, breakouts, whatever it is you get on your face fight them with exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin helps to keep pores clean and free from congestion, when your pores get clogged up with dirt and dead skin cells the oil from your skin gets trapped causing breakouts.  So keep your pores clean and exfoliate your way to clearer skin.

Improved Texture

Do you suffer from rough or dry skin? Exfoliating your skin is a great way to bring it back to life. This process helps to make skin smooth by getting rid of the dead skin cells that refuse to leave the body.

So if you’re anything like me and didn’t really take the exfoliation process that seriously, it’s time to think again. For brighter, younger looking, smoother skin exfoliation is the key.

The ONLY Beauty Product you Need…

Makeup has now become the standard essential these days; everyone wears foundation, mascara, eyeliner, blush, primer, lipstick, perfectly pencilled in eyebrows, and cheek bones so contoured we have all begun looking like Angelina Jolie replicas (with a slight tan).

But if you’re anything like me and only have the basic knowledge and skillset when it comes to applying makeup, barely being able to blend the foundation into the neck crease at the best of times, and looking like someone gave you a black eye when trying to do the Smokey-eyed look, it gets a little difficult and time consuming trying to look Beyoncé flawless 24/7. And now, with all of these new techniques and practises that have come out, like baking and strobing (These are actual make up terms!) it has turned applying our make up, something that was once enjoyable into something so technical that its almost a headache trying to keep up.

There must be a simpler way to manoeuvre through the world of beauty, if we only had that one beauty essential, something that would accentuate our number one feature or hide our biggest insecurity.

With this in mind, I decided to seek out my good friend and make up artist Nikita Ellis from Creativefacez to get her guidance and expert opinion to break down make-up into its most basic form so that we can all understand (present company included) and discover what the bare essentials are for our own individual beauty requirements.

Small Eyes

If you have naturally small eyes the only tool you need in your beauty arsenal is eyeliner and mascara. Using the combination definitely enhances your eyes and makes them pop. Fear no more about your eyes getting lost in the rest of your face, using these two will have your eyes looking fabulous and make people have a double take.

Oily Skin

The days of having to constantly worry about if your going to cause an accident while you are walking down the road because of the glare that’s radiating off your face are over. Primer is your new best friend; this handy little jar of deliciousness can be used with or without foundation. However, if you are going to apply foundation, the primer is the 1st step you take after the face has been cleansed and moisturized. You really cannot go wrong with investing in a primer, it is the perfect weapon against oily skin as it minimises the appearance of pores and evens skin tone.

Dry Skin

Moisturize, MOISTURIZE, MOUSTURIZE! I really cannot say this enough. If you have dry skin, invest in a good face crème, preferably with a high SPF, and start drinking plenty of water of course.

Blemishes

Instead of spending hours trying to masterfully hide every imperfection by applying a full face of make-up trying to hide away those embarrassing blemishes, why not just invest in some concealer or BB crème. Way easier, way quicker and way cheaper than having to go through the whole process of foundation and setting it with some powder. Concealer is great for hiding those dark circles under your eyes, blemishes, scars, even age spots, the list could go on but I think you get the idea.

No Eye Brows! *GASP*

I’m not sure when eyebrows made such a comeback but they have, brows are now the be all and end all for beauty bloggers, make up artists and especially the average Jane. Who has perfectly shaped eyebrows, or more importantly who doesn’t- is definitely the topic of conversation for most ladies who lunch these days.

To get those perfectly preened brows you must firstly have the perfect shape, which can be profiled for you by your local beauty salon, getting rid of those straggly hairs is a necessity. Using an eyebrow pencil or powder that matches the colour of your own eyebrows is also essential, and blending is another critical factor to make sure they come out looking natural and not like you just got a box of crayons and decided to use your face as the display.

Dull Skin

If you’re tired of looking like the ghost of Christmas past and want to add some life back into your appearance, blush is the way to go. It simulates a natural glow and adds life and energy back into your face, not only that but it can also help structure your face shape.

Face Shape

Much like blush, contouring is what you need in your life if you’re tired of the way your face looks. Yes that sounds silly, but contouring your face can actually make it appear to be a different shape. (It confuses me too don’t worry) this one is best left to the professionals but if you are tired of the face that was blessed upon you by your parents genes, then invest in some new brushes and sign up to YouTube so you can follow one of the beauty bloggers for tips on how to make the drastic change to your face shape by contouring.

Lips

Last but by no means least, if you do not like your lips there is something you can do, besides trying that whole Kylie Jenner lip enhancing challenge (a bad bad, very bad idea) why not just try out different colours. Lipstick is amazing because it brings attention to your lips and can also signify different feelings and emotions just based on the colour. If you want to go for a sexy come-hither look, red lips are the way to go. Black lipstick can signify boldness and confidence- although be careful because you could also end up looking gothic, and if that’s not what you’re going for then avoid. Pink lipstick is playful and fun, and if you happen to suffer from dry of cracking lips then the best course of action for you may just be a lip balm to help inject some of the moisture back into your lips.

So I hope this helps combat some of our own questions about make up and how we can accentuate our best features or hide our deepest insecurities without having to spend hours in front of the mirror.

Drink Water

For keeping your skin looking flawless and hydrated drinking water is the best way to go. It helps to flush out toxins, and if your skin is not getting the sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will result in making your skin dry, tight and flaky which would make it more prone to wrinkling. So for a radiant, wrinkle free glow. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Sun Tan Lotion

No matter how accustomed you believe you are to the sun, using sun tan lotion is essential to keeping your skin burn free. Sun tan lotion also helps prevent skin discoloration, the development of wrinkles, and premature aging skin. So to keep yourself looking unblemished, and wrinkle free make sure you keep lathered up at all times- not just when going to the beach.
